Iran protesters storm UK embassy in Tehran

Protesters in the Iranian capital, Tehran, have broken into the UK embassy compound during a demonstration against sanctions imposed by Britain.
Militant students are said to have removed the British flag, burnt it and replaced it with Iran's flag. State TV showed youths smashing embassy windows.
The move comes after Iran resolved to reduce ties following the UK's decision to impose further sanctions on it.
The UK's Foreign Office said it was "outraged" by the actions.
"It is utterly unacceptable," it said in a statement. "The Iranian government have a clear duty to protect diplomats and embassies in their country and we expect them to act urgently to bring the situation under control and ensure the safety of our staff and security of our property".
It later updated its travel advice to Iran, urging Britons there to "stay indoors, keep a low profile and await further advice".

Katie McFarland, an FGCU graduate student, first saw large numbers of dead mullet floating in the bay and washed up along the shoreline Friday.
Saturday morning, McFarland took another trip onto the bay to take water samples and saw hundreds of mullet between FGCU’s Vester Field Station and New Pass.
“From what I’ve heard, it’s the whole bay,” she said. “I’ve yet to see anything but mullet. It’s crazy, the numbers of them.”
Soon after he made that comment, McFarland found one dead Atlantic spadefish.

RADIATION STORM AND CME ALERT

A solar radiation storm is in progress around Earth. At the moment, the storm is classified as minor, which means it has little effect on our planet other than to disturb HF radio transmissions at high latitudes. Bigger effects, however, may be in the offing. The same blast that caused the radiation storm also hurled a CME into space at about 930 km/s (2 million mph). Oh no! Another Mayan prediction of an apocalypse in 2012 is found

Carving at Comalcalco ruin 'backs up' first prophecy that world will end on December 21 next year.

They've done their best in the past to downplay theories that the ancient Mayas predicted some sort of apocalypse would occur in 2012.
But archaelogists at Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History have admitted that a second reference to the date exists on a carved fragment.
The Tortuguero inscription describes something that is supposed to occur in 2012 involving Bolon Yokte, a mysterious Mayan god associated with both war and creation.
Could it be JESUS?
But the date on the brick could also correspond to similar dates in the past, Mr Stuart said.
'There's no reason it couldn't be also a date in ancient times, describing some important historical event in the Classic period,' he said.
'In fact, the third glyph on the brick seems to read as the verb huli, which means 'he/she/it arrives'.

Evidence of Intelligence and War in the Heavens

In the 1800's astronomers were recording changes on Mars and events that they had no reference to compare to. Events such as bright projections and tawny colored cloud of dust extending over 300 miles from the surface. Surface features that were "clearly visible two years ago, it no longer exists today", Henri Perrotin, 1888. They had never previously seen the detonation of weapons the magnitude we now produce; the cloud and bright flash from nuclear weapons.
We can now understand what these early astronomers were recording in their photographs and their note books.

Mysterious Colors Flash Over Bridgewater, NJ [3 Clips] Transformer Fires?

'Mystery in Bridgewater: What caused strange glowing lights in the sky?'
Some county and Bridgewater officials believe that transformer fires caused by heavy rain may have played a part in the freakish light show, although they had no definitive answers about the source of the lights.
Shortly after midnight, several Bridgewater residents reported seeing a pulsating glow in the distance that changed colors, similar to the aurora borealis. They said the lights appeared to come from the northern part of the township.
"The sky lit up like pure daylight," said 87-year-old Joseph Wing, who lives on Foothill Road. "This was unlike anything I've ever seen."

Russia in Europe missile threat

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has warned that missiles could be deployed on the EU's borders if the US pursues its missile defence plans.

In a televised statement, he said "modern weapons systems" could be deployed in Kaliningrad if Russia, the US and Nato failed to come to a deal.
He added that Moscow may opt out of the New Start arms deal agreed with the US.
Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said he was "very disappointed" by Mr Medvedev's response.
Washington wants an anti-missile shield ready by 2020 but Moscow considers the idea a threat to its nuclear forces.
The US says the shield is intended to provide protection from the potential missile threat posed by countries like Iran.

It takes me a minute to find it -- unedited I show the full discovery process real time ... sorry it may drag on a bit -- but thats how the process goes ! And why its important to do the extra investigation to see what lies beneath !
Seen on College of Dupage --- originally looked at the area because of a reported "RADAR flare" HAARP ring over KS, OK .
The final destination of this object / (these OBJECTS) seems to be very close to McConnell AFB -- either that or Wichita International Airport --- however with the flare being what it was -- and the altitude the object must have been at.. the steep decent angle of the "craft" and the speed of it.. I would say it landed at the AFB in my opinion.

Signal picked up from Russia's stranded Mars probe

Contact has finally been made with Russia's troubled Mars mission, says the European Space Agency (Esa).

The agency reports that its tracking station in Perth, Australia, picked up a signal from the Phobos-Grunt probe.
Esa is now working with Russian engineers to see how best to maintain communications with the craft.
Phobos-Grunt has been stuck in Earth orbit since its launch on 9 November, unable to fire the engine that would take it on to Mars.
It raises the hope that Russian controllers can establish what is wrong with the spacecraft and fix it.
Phobos-Grunt still has a short window in which to start its journey before a change in the alignment of the planets produces a gap between the Red Planet and Earth that is too big to cross.
The European Space Operations Centre (Esoc) in Darmstadt reports that the contact was made at 2025 GMT on Tuesday. A spokesman said some modifications had been to the 15m dish facility in Perth to improve its chances of getting a signal.

Using timelapse cameras, specialists recorded the salt water being excluded from the sea ice and sinking to the sea floor.
The temperature of this sinking brine, which was well below 0C, caused the water to freeze in an icy sheath around it.
Where the so-called 'brinicle' met the sea bed a web of ice formed freezing everything it touched, including sea urchins and starfish.

'UFO' Sound for New Police Sirens

"WILDER, Ky. - Chief Anthony Rouse of the Wilder Police Department says the new siren on several of his squad cars could save a life.
"The more we can let the public know we are coming...gives us that much more time," said Rouse about the Rumbler.
The Rumbler is a 100-200 watt low frequency warning siren. It is mounted towards the front of the cruiser and low to the ground.
"The sound bounces off the ground and reaches people right where they are. The old sirens placed on the light bar would often go over the heads of people," explained Rouse.
The reverberating tones as explained by Wilder's supplier are able to penetrate vehicles.

The acidification of the world’s oceans from an excess of CO2 emissions has already begun, as evidenced recently by the widespread mortality of oyster larvae in the Pacific Northwest. Scientists say this is just a harbinger of things to come if greenhouse gas emissions continue to soar.

Standing on the shores of Netarts Bay in Oregon on a sunny fall morning, it’s hard to imagine that the fate of the oysters being raised here at the Whiskey Creek Shellfish Hatchery is being determined by what came out of smokestacks and tailpipes in the 1960s and ‘70s. But this rural coastal spot and the shellfish it has nurtured for centuries are a bellwether of one of the most palpable changes being caused by global carbon dioxide emissions — ocean acidification.
It was here, from 2006 to 2008, that oyster larvae began dying dramatically, with hatchery owners Mark Wiegardt and his wife, Sue Cudd, experiencing larvae losses of 70 to 80 percent. “Historically we’ve had larvae mortalities,” says Wiegardt, but those deaths were usually related to bacteria. After spending thousands of dollars to disinfect and filter out pathogens, the hatchery’s oyster larvae were still dying.

Australia agrees US Marine deployment plan

 Australia has agreed to host a full US Marine task force in the coming years, Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced at a news conference with US President Barack Obama in Canberra.

She said about 250 US Marines would arrive next year, eventually being built up to 2,500 personnel.
The deployment is being seen as a move to counter China's growing influence.
But Mr Obama said the US was "stepping up its commitment to the entire Asia-Pacific", not excluding China.
"The main message that I've said, not only publicly but also privately to China, is that with their rise comes increased responsibility," he said.
"It is important for them to play by the rules of the road."

On Tim Stroll's remote Strafford property, there are goats and horses. There used to be others.
"Next thing was, my chickens were disappearing."
Stoll was really taken aback when he found a bird on his porch brutalized, but alive.
"Whatever it was, it was killing animals in broad daylight. Then last Saturday, Stoll and his step-son Dalton Pennington saw something odd.

"Solar forums all over the world are buzzing with Sun-stronomers proclaiming this to be the biggest prominence that many of them had ever witnessed," he says.
Remarkably, though, this is not the biggest thing. A dark filament of magnetism is winding halfway around the entire sun: SDO image. From end to end, it stretches more than a million km or about three times the distance between Earth and the Moon. If the filament becomes unstable, as solar filaments are prone to do, it could collapse and hit the stellar surface below, triggering a Hyder flare. No one can say if the eruption of such a sprawling structure would be Earth directed.

Greeks claim having found Alexander the Great’s tomb, And...... The Ark of the Covenant

Athens. It is believed that the tomb of Alexander the Great and the Ark of the Covenant have been found on the Greek Island of Thasos, announced Russian Grekomania.ru, which is information partner of the Greek Minister of Culture and Tourism.
Head of the research group Pitia Nikolaos Kumardzis announced that the findings emerged during amateur excavations. According to him, some unexpected results were reported during the excavations on Thasos Island.
Greek researchers are convinced that the findings really are the tomb of Alexander the Great and the Ark of the Covenant.

So you thought the 2005 YU-55 Asteroid was a close shave at 860,000 miles distance from the Earth?
Think again, Asteroid 2011 CQ1 was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey on February 4th 2011 and made a record close Earth approach 14 hours later on February 4 at 19:39 UT (14:39 EST). It passed to within 0.85 Earth radii (5480 km) of the Earth's surface over a region in the mid-Pacific. This object, is the closest non-impacting object in our asteroid catalog to date.
As usual, not much information of this very close encounter was to be found on the main stream media!

SPOTTED SUNRISE, Huge Sun Spot Seen With Normal Camera!

Solar Cycle 24 is gaining steam with more sunspots, solar flares, and CMEs than we've seen in years. This development is having a visible effect on the solar disk; it's not blank anymore. Today's snapshot from Jett Aguilar of Quezon City, the Philippines, reveals a distinctly spotty sunrise.
"At sunrise this morning, I was finally able to capture the active sun with its face stippled with sunspots," says Aguilar. "Giant sunspot AR1339 was particulary visible."
To take the picture, he used an off-the-shelf Canon 50D digital camera with a Canon EF 100-400 mm lens.

Russian Probe May Crash in Populated Area "Most toxic falling satellite ever." NASA!

Why do US parents send chicken-pox lollies in the post?

US authorities have warned parents that posting infected lollipops to other families who want their children to get chickenpox is against the law. But why are the parents doing it?

The news that some parents have been apparently posting saliva-soaked tissues and licked lollipops to each other in an attempt to spread chicken pox among their children has been greeted with widespread condemnation.
Doctors have cautioned that licking a supposedly infected lollipop is unlikely to pass on chickenpox - which is mostly an airborne virus - but could expose a child to other, more serious ailments.
And Jerry Martin, US attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee, warned that anyone attempting to send so-called "pox packages" through the mail would be breaking federal laws against shipping biohazards across state lines.
The Facebook page on which parents were discussing "pox packages" - Find a Pox Party In Your Area - has now ceased to exist.

Another Mystery Boom! 911 Calls: Mystery 'Explosion' Alarms Dalton, GA Residents

DALTON, GA - "A 2.7 magnitude quake rocked the Dalton area just before noon Wednesday. While some people in Dalton were pretty sure the rumble was an earthquake, others were convinced it was something else.
"Chances are it might have been an earthquake, but maybe it was some big monster outside that's coming to get us all," Jonathan Marks jokes about the magnitude 2.7 quake, but he wasn't the only one who was curious about what caused the ground to shake beneath his feet. The US Geological Survey didn't officially deem the shake, a quake until 2 hours after people say they felt the ground rattle and heard a loud boom in the air.
"I thought it was kind of like a huge explosion or a sonic boom because there was a little noise at first and then a loud explosion and I felt it right between my shoulders it was like it come from the air," said Mary Ellen Gurley, an employee at Dalton State College.
The USGS says Northwest Georgia is not an area prone to quakes. The largest earthquake in our seismic zone was on April 29th, 2003. It was a 4.6 magnitude near Fort Payne, Alabama. So if you had never felt one until Wednesday, you probably wouldn't have known what it was.

New Fish Horror! Mystery marine disease off Gladstone

Fishing in the World Heritage-listed waters off the coast of Gladstone is a business for many and a popular pastime for locals, but ever since the outbreak of disease in marine life, the industry there has been in panic mode.

An unprecedented number of fish with red spots, lesions and parasites, as well as dead dugongs and turtles, have been found this year.
Fishermen and conservationists blame the state of the marine life on dredging to widen Gladstone Harbour to accommodate carrier ships servicing the booming liquefied natural gas and coal seam gas industries.
But the Gladstone Port Corporation does not believe the dredging is causing the disease in fish, and authorities say last year's wet summer may be a factor in the poor health of the harbour.
Water testing shows a number of sites within the harbour exceeded national guidelines for aluminium, copper and chromium. Experts say the levels pose a minimal risk to marine life; however, the Queensland Government has appointed an independent scientific panel to conduct more research.

Rising from beneath the waves: A new Canary Island emerges!

Volcano off El Hierro is just 70metres away from the surface and is spewing magma 20metres into the sky
Nearby town is evacuated and ships banned from travelling to the area as strong smell of sulphur fills the air
Explosive plumes and jets have been spotted coming from the volcano for the last month
A brand new Canary island is emerging from the sea as an underwater volcano bubbles to the surface.
Magma off the Canary Island of El Hierro has been spewing 20 metres high as the sea boils with a smell of sulphur.
As it grows and gets closer to the surface, more and more debris such as stones start to shoot out of the volcano which, until now, has only shown its explosive power below the surface.
It is now just 70 metres from the surface and islanders are already trying to come up with a name for the new island. It is quite close to El Hierro and if it continues to erupt it could eventually meet up with the mainland.

Storm activity on sun heats up in area called ‘benevolent monster’ by scientists

Scientists at the federal Space Weather Prediction Center say that area is the most active part of the sun since 2005. It has dozens of sunspots, including one that is the size of 17 Earths. Sunspots are kinks or knots in the sun’s magnetic field.
“It’s beautiful,” said forecaster Jess Whittington. “It’s still growing. The size is what blows me away.”
Thursday’s flare wasn’t aimed at Earth. However, this active region is now slowly turning toward Earth, and scientists say it will be directly facing Earth in about five days.
That storm region will only affect Earth if it shoots off flares and they hit our planet, which doesn’t always happen with stormy areas, said prediction center space scientist Joe Kunches.
The region will be facing Earth for about two weeks as it rotates, he said.

Alaska faces one of its worst storms ever, forecasters say

Alaska is facing a life threatening winter storm with near hurricane force winds, more than a foot of snow and severe coastal flooding, the National Weather Service says.
"This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening storm which will be one of the worst on record over the Bering Sea and the west coast," NWS forecasters said in a bulletin Monday afternoon.
The storm was about 600 miles southwest of Shemya in the far western Aleutian Islands on Monday afternoon and was expected to move over the Bering Sea toward Alaska's west coast on Tuesday.
Winds near hurricane force of 74 mph were expected to generate seas as high as 25 feet in the northern Bering Sea, forecasters said. The winds were expected to raise sea levels as much as 9 feet in the Norton Sound. Those levels combined with the high waves were expected to cause significant coastal erosion and major flooding. The winds may also push sea ice on shore, adding to the dangers, NWS forecasters said.
Alaska's west coast could also see as much as 14 inches of snow in blizzard conditions, forecasters said. The storm was expected to last into Wednesday.

UN nuclear agency: Iran 'studying nuclear weapons tests'

The UN's nuclear watchdog says it has information indicating Iran has carried out tests "relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device".

In its latest report on Iran, the IAEA says the research includes computer models that could only be used to develop a nuclear bomb trigger.
Correspondents say this is the International Atomic Energy Agency's toughest report on Iran to date.
Iran says its nuclear programme is solely to generate civilian power.
The BBC's Bethany Bell, in Geneva, has examined the IAEA's latest quarterly report on Iran's nuclear programme.
She says the report gives detailed information - some new - suggesting that Iran conducted computer modelling of a kind that would only be relevant to a nuclear weapon.
The report notes that some of this research, conducted in 2008-09, is of "particular concern", our correspondent says.
"The application of such studies to anything other than a nuclear explosive is unclear to the agency," the report says.

THE WHITE HOUSE REPLY, regarding ET Alien lifeforms. They have not contacted Earth yet, the White House claimed over the weekend in response to petitions asking for information on supposed human interactions with extraterrestrials.
"The U.S. government has no evidence that any life exists outside our planet, or that an extraterrestrial presence has contacted or engaged any member of the human race," Phil Larson of the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy wrote in a blog post responding to the inquiries. "In addition, there is no credible information to suggest that any evidence is being hidden from the public's eye."
While Larson maintained that there was no irrefutable proof of supposed alien life, he continued to tick off programs that were being used to further our "understanding if life can or does exist off Earth."

Sarkozy: "I cannot stand Netanyahu. He is a liar."

You'd think politicians would have learnt to check whether their microphones were switched off, by now -- but apparently not.
The latest to be caught out are Nicolas Sarkozy, and Barack Obama, who were caught criticising Binyamin Netanyahu in a private conversation at the G20 summit -- unaware that this private exchange was being broadcast to a small group of journalists.
The gaffe took place during a frank exchange where Obama took Sarkozy to task for not warning him that France would backing Palestine's request for membership of the UN cultural heritage agency, Unesco. Referring to the Israeli prime minister, Sarkozy told Obama: "I cannot stand him. He's a liar." The US President responded: "You're fed up with him? I have to deal with him every day."
Apparently, neither leader realised that microphones that had been attached for a press conference were still switched on. The comments initially went unreported, until French website Arrêt Sur Images reported it today. A Reuters journalist, also present, confirmed this account.

As I looked over head I saw some weird cloud shoots of light and puff as the clouds seemed to reform sporadically. I could see that a storm cloud was building, but the light and visual show was intriguing me. So I grabbed my iPhone and recorded this :)

In Five Days the World Could End (As You Know It)

If you woke up in five days and there was no electricity, no internet, no cell phones, what would you do? As for me, I'll answer that question at the end of this article. But why worry, it's not going to happen. But it could and I'll explain it briefly.
In five days, a large “benevolent monster” of a sunspot is turning to face the Earth. The most active part of the entire sun since 2005. And “it's still growing,” according to Jess Whittington, a forecaster at the federal Space Weather Prediction Center. This “benevolent monster” of a sunspot will only be facing our planet for two weeks.
The consequences of this is dire, if you only understand what happens if this “benevolent monster” of a sunspot unleashes it's full fury upon our small planet. Let's go back in time to 1859.
From August 28 until September 2, 1859, the earth faced a similar scenario such as what is occurring in five days. On September 1, 1859, the largest flare came unleashed a coronal mass ejection straight at the Earth. And just 18 hours later, the largest recorded geomagnetic storm hit the Earth.
In Boston, the light was so bright that even at 1:00 AM, people could read the newspaper without any other light sources around them. The currents in long Telegraph wires in both the United States and Europe experienced induced ElectroMagnetic Force. Fires broke out in the telegraph offices and even shocked the telegraph operators. Auroras were seen in Hawaii, Mexico, Cuba and Italy. This was the 1859 solar superstorm.
In five days, the electric grid to the United States could be virtually destroyed in the northern Half of the United States. With 130 million people without electricity for 4 to 10 years as 350 transformers are destroyed. The entire Alaska Pipeline could erupt into a fireball. All land line telephones could be destroyed.
So in five days, if a solar superstorm such as the one that hit the Earth in 1859 hits the Earth again, then I'll calmly sit back and open my Bible and read it under the 1:00 AM lights.

Searching for ET, But No Evidence Yet "Wink Wink, Nod Nod, Say No More"

The White House has responded to two petitions asking the US government to formally acknowledge that aliens have visited Earth and to disclose to any intentional withholding of government interactions with extraterrestrial beings.

Thank you for signing the petition asking the Obama Administration to acknowledge an extraterrestrial presence here on Earth.

The U.S. government has no evidence that any life exists outside our planet, or that an extraterrestrial presence has contacted or engaged any member of the human race. In addition, there is no credible information to suggest that any evidence is being hidden from the public's eye.

Revealed: publisher owned by the Catholic Church sells pornography

Germany's biggest Catholic-owned publishing house has been rocked by disclosures that it has been selling thousands of pornographic novels with titles such as Sluts Boarding School and Lawyer's Whore with the full assent of the country's leading bishops.

The revelations made in the publishing-industry newsletter Buchreport concern Weltbild, a company with an annual €1.7bn (£1.5bn) turnover and 6,400 employees. It is Germany's largest bookseller after Amazon and wholly owned by the Catholic Church.
Buchreport revealed that Weltbild's massive assortment of titles available to customers online includes some 2,500 "erotic" books with unmistakably lewd titles including Call Me Slut!, Take Me Here, Take Me Now! and Lawyer's Whore, to name a few. The publisher's website also pictures the titles' lascivious dust jackets that feature colour photographs of scantily clad women in high heels and erotic underwear.

False Flag Event? Iran Declares War?

YU-55 - A round object, classified as an asteroid, mentioned on main-stream media, talked about incessantly by the disinformation agent Richard C. Hoagland (warning), not-spinning at all (warning), and coming closer to the earth than any cosmic object of this size has historically (at least that I'm aware of), and is approximately 1300-1500 feet in diameter.  It is suggested should this object crash into the ocean the resulting tidal wave would be approximately 70 feet high, and travel 600 miles.  That's relatively noteworthy.

It's also noteworthy this object is supposedly passing between the earth and moon on the same date of the FEMA Emergency Broadcast System Test (November 9th).  It's also noteworthy this Pacific Wave 2011 "tsunami drill" is happening during this object's passing.  It's also noteworthy there is a mysterious "Red X" supposedly discovered in some "leaked" Google Earth XML file from NASA showing up at nearly the same location as the Pac Wave 11 drill mock impact zone.  In fact there are more bizarre coincidental "drills" taking place the week of November 7th than I can recall.  Everything from "nuclear drills" to "tsunami drills".

Oklahoma MAN MADE earthquakes -- 5.6 magnitude within occuring swarm

Recently, over the past several months, several earthquake swarms have occurred in Colorado/New Mexico border, Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
All of these swarms have been VERIFIED oil/fracking fields ... seen simply by looking at satellite images of the areas .. for sure 'frac' drilling pads and oil wells.
Over a dozen earthquakes in a "Fracking" field --- FRAC well drilling at the direct area of the epicenter of the 5.6, the 4.7 and the 4.0 (as well as about 10 other smaller earthquakes so far).

Three-Eyed Fish Caught Near Argentinian Nuclear Power Plant

Fishermen in Argentina are claiming that they have caught a three-eyed fish in a reservoir in the Córdoba province, and it just so happens that a nearby nuclear facility pumps its hot water directly into this body of water.
Unsurprisingly, the discovery of the three-eyed wolffish has prompted concerns about the levels of radiation in the reservoir and to what degree the local wildlife are affected. We’re no experts, but if they’re growing extra eyes – we’d say quite a bit.
In an episode of The Simpsons, nuclear power plant owner Mr. Burns tries to justify the existence of Blinky, a three-eyed fish caught in the local river, by saying it is the next step in evolution and not a horrible mutation. Strangely though, he refuses to eat Blinky when it is served to him — we’re not surprised. But while Blinky is the product of a fictional cartoon, this three-eyed fish caught nearby a nuclear facility in Argentina, is not.

U.S. military official: We are concerned Israel will not warn us before Iran attack

Senior U.S. military official tells CNN U.S. 'increasingly vigilant' over military developments in Iran and Israel, says 'absolutely' concerned Israel may attack Iran nuclear facilities.
U.S. officials are concerned that Israel will not warn them before taking military action against Iran's nuclear facilities, a senior U.S. military official said Friday.
The official, who asked to remain anonymous, told the CNN network that although in the past, U.S. officials thought they would receive warning from Israel if it did take military action against Iran, "now that doesn't seem so ironclad."

Major berg forming in Antarctica

Scientists are monitoring the birth of a monster iceberg in West Antarctica.

A rift has formed in the shelf of floating ice in front of the Pine Island Glacier (PIG).
The crack in the PIG runs for almost 30km (20 miles), is 60m (200ft) deep and is growing every day.
US space agency (Nasa) researchers expect the eventual berg to cover about 880 sq km - an area the size of Berlin. It should break away towards the end of the year or early in 2012.
Pine Island Glacier is one of the largest and fastest-moving tongues of ice on the White Continent and drains something like 10% of all the ice flowing out of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet into the ocean.
In recent years, satellite and airborne measurements have recorded a marked thinning of the PIG, which may be related to climate changes.
But the team working on Nasa's Icebridge project say this latest birthing of a giant berg is part of a natural cycle seen every 10 years or so on the glacier.
"The last big calving event occurred in 2001 so in general people have been expecting something like this to happen fairly soon, and for us it is very exciting to see this while it is happening," said Icebridge project scientist Dr Michael Studinger.
Icebridge is running a series of instrumented airborne campaigns to measure the thickness of ice in Earth's polar regions. The "bridge" in its name refers to the data that must be gathered to fill the gap between Nasa's now defunct Icesat laser altimeter spacecraft and the future Icesat-2 mission due to come into operation later this decade.
