will Krakatau rock the world again?

ORIGINAL CAPTION: Firestorm: In an awesome display of flaming lava and molten ash, Anak Krakatau - the child of Krakatau - reveals its latent power. In recent years, eruptions have steadily grown in intensity.

In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Hubble View: Jupiter Impact

Hubble View: Jupiter Impact

Explanation: This sprawling dark marking is Jupiter's latest impact scar, a debris plume created as a small asteroid or comet disintegrated after plunging into the gas giant's atmosphere. Located in Jupiter's south polar region, the new feature was discovered by Australian amateur astronomer Anthony Wesley on July 19. On July 23rd Wesley's discovery was followed up by the Hubble Space Telescope with its newly installed Wide Field Camera 3, creating this sharpest view of the evolving debris plume. Estimates indicate that the impacting object itself was several hundred meters across. Similar impact markings were created when pieces of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 slammed into Jupiter's cloud bands in July of 1994.

There is a Hunger Coming Like a Run-Away Freight Train

There is a Hunger Coming Like a Run-Away Freight Train: Created by Congress

July 25, 2009
Clint Richardson

I've driven the almost 400 mile stretch of Interstate 5 from L.A. to Sacramento dozens of times. Quite honestly, it's as boring as it gets with only the usual gas stations, mini-marts, fast-food, home-cookin' restaurants, and strangely a newer batch of Starbuck's Coffee shops sprouting up everywhere. In between... farms, orchards, cattle, and dirt.

On July 15th, as I began my trip to Utah, I came off the Grapevine decline and hit the flat 250 or so mile stretch of interstate which begins the farming belt in the valley. Almost immediately I noticed what I had only heard about on the radio and in the papers. Where once there were vast fields of green, now there where empty, barely recognizable rows of unplanted dirt and growing weeds. Only sporadically at first, but once I passed Bakersfield and for about a 200 mile stretch, I could not believe my eyes. Field after field laid fallow. And not really fallow, but unattended... as if it was not going to be planted in the near future either.

Signs were staked in the ground on almost every patch of barren farmland. The most common one, which was yellow and obviously a group effort to wake up the sleeping travelers of their future plight, read:

"CONGRESS CREATED DUST BOWL"

Others, which looked more homemade were posted on non-operational farm equipment parked as close to the freeway as possible, stated things like:

"FOOD ONLY GROWS WHERE WATER FLOWS" -and- "NO WATER = NO JOBS = NO FUTURE"

At one point, after 150 miles or so of seeing this horror, I broke down in tears and had to pull over to the side of the road. I saw the aqueduct, which followed Interstate 5 most of the way, and large fields of dead trees which were planted just a few feet from the flowing cement river. I imagined how those trees would feel, imprisoned in the dying dirt by their own roots, if they could indeed comprehend that their source of life was just a stones throw away.

It was like some horrific story-book come to life; science fiction in real time. I was thinking of the farmers and their families and wondering what would become of them and their land. I was thinking about the consequences of hundreds of miles of food no longer being grown, and adding together the other states like Campo, Colorado which have the same situation... only planting 60% of their crops this year.

This deadness went on until the brink of civilization once again began to show. When I approached the Stockton/Modesto highway interchange area the carnage seemed to stop, and the fields appeared to be healthy and bountiful. I can only guess that this is because more people drive on that stretch of the freeway, and so the powers that be are trying to keep up appearances. No other explanation came to mind.

To the readers of this, I can only say that living in the city has literally blinded me to the truth, even though I knew it was happening. I wonder how many other things I ignore? Many economists and trends predictors have called for food shortages and food riots in the fall, and with what I saw last week, I have new reason to believe them.
But then, that's the real problem isn't it? Belief...

If you believe that the food will continue to flow (magically appearing on store shelves in a grocery store near you) and just dismiss the very real claims of shortages worldwide, including a severe wheat shortage in this country due to a harmful fungus, then I might boldly say that you deserve whatever fate befalls you.

I challenge you all to take a drive up the 5 and see this for yourself. Please! Don't let this go unseen. If you are camera or video savvy, I think it would be a really great photo exhibit or website showing the true nature of our common problem. And you better believe, as you take your daily shower, flush your toilet, and water your fertilized-non-edible grassy yards, that this is indeed a Congress created crisis. So please tell as many people about it as possible.

Lastly, if you haven't already... buy storable food! Go to the dollar store and buy rice and beans. Buy pasta, canned and jar foods, or anything with a shelf-life of more than 6 months.

What's the worse that can happen? You'll have food for 6 months.

What's the best that can happen? You'll have food for 6 months.

Take care. Spread this information. Get mad. Fight tyranny. And...

Don't be a sheep.

6 Minutes 42 Seconds

6 Minutes 42 Seconds

Explanation: The July 22nd total solar eclipse was the longest of the 21st century. From the point of maximum eclipse along the Moon's shadow track across the Pacific Ocean, the Moon completely blocked the Sun for a total of 6 minutes and 39 seconds. But from the deck of this cruise ship the duration of the total eclipse phase was extended to a whopping 6 minutes and 42 seconds by the ship's motion along the shadow track. This panoramic view of the scene shows the shimmering solar corona in a darkened daytime sky, with clouds silhouetted by a bright sky on the distant horizon, beyond the Moon's shadow. Mercury can be seen near the eclipsed Sun. Venus lies near the upper right edge of the frame.

SPACE STATION SILHOUETTE

SPACE STATION SILHOUETTE: It happened in a split second. On July 26th, the International Space Station (ISS) flew in front of the sun over Orleans, France, where astrophotographer Thierry Legault was waiting. He couldn't see the 0.8s transit with the unaided eye, but his telescope and digital camera captured this image:

Photo details: Canon 5D MkII, Takahashi TOA-150 refractor, Herschel prism, 1/8000s

"The silhouette shows space shuttle Endeavour docked to the ISS," he says. "The shuttle's payload bay arm is visible, too."

Legault has taken many pictures of spaceships passing in front of the sun. When he stands beside the telescope at the moment of transit, listening to the camera click, there is no assurance of a good shot. "I never know if the ship will be visible or not, or if the seeing will give good or bad images. The discovery of the silhouette on the computer screen later is the moment I prefer and is a great pleasure."

The ISS will be transiting the French sun again, perhaps several times, in the weeks ahead, says Legault. Stay tuned for snapshots.

Earth and Moon seen from Mars

Credit: NASA/JPL/University of Arizona

The HiRISE instrument would make a great backyard telescope for viewing Mars, and we can also use it at Mars to view other planets, such as Jupiter.

This is an image of Earth and the Moon, acquired at 5:20 a.m. MST on 3 October 2007, at a range of 142 million kilometers, which gives the HiRISE image a scale of 142 km/pixel and an Earth diameter of about 90 pixels and a Moon diameter of 24 pixels. The phase angle is 98 degrees, which means that less than half of the disks of the Earth and Moon have direct illumination. We could image Earth/Moon at full disk illumination only when they are on the opposite side of the sun from Mars, but then the range would be much greater and the image would show less detail.

On the day this image was taken, the Japanese Kayuga (Selene) spacecraft was en route from the Earth to the Moon, and has since returned spectacular images and movies.

On the Earth image we can make out the west coast outline of South America at lower right, although the clouds are the dominant features. These clouds are so bright, compared with the Moon, that they are saturated in the HiRISE images. In fact, the RED-filter image was almost completely saturated, the blue-green image had significant saturation, and the brightest clouds were saturated in the IR image. This color image required a fair amount of processing to make a nice-looking release.

New message from Ronald Weinland: PANDEMIC & QUARANTINE:

PANDEMIC & QUARANTINE:
July 23, 2009

The subject of this post will remain on this site for a short time and then it will be placed permanently on the Church website (www.cog-pkg.org) in the “Topics” section of the FAQ.

Due to the understanding we have about pandemics becoming more of a reality in this end-time, it is necessary to address a few matters relating to this subject.

The current strain of the H1N1 flu has rapidly spread throughout the world, but currently it is not as serious as many other flu strains of the past. The uniqueness of this strain is that it is especially dangerous to people with other ongoing health problems and weaknesses, and it is proving to be more dangerous to the young. This strain has proven to be one that replicates more easily in the lungs and can spread beyond the upper respiratory tract to go deep into the lungs, making it more likely to cause pneumonia.

God does address the matter of sickness and the principles of quarantine in scripture. The act of voluntarily quarantining ourselves from others when we have a communicable illness is simply the principle and expression of love. Love toward others should always include concern for their welfare and their protection when we are sick, especially when running a temperature, experiencing flu-like symptoms, coughing, etc., that might be passed along to another person.

In addition, if a serious pandemic does strike one’s own environment, the individual will have to make a personal decision to quarantine oneself from others (such as crowds, work, etc.) if their personal environment becomes too dangerous to be mixing within it. This is a personal judgment each individual will have to make. Such decisions may have to be made for self-protection or the desire to protect one’s family from possibly catching a sickness that could potentially prove fatal.

Although the current strain of H1N1 is only primarily dangerous to a narrow group of people, it is never-the-less very serious to those within that group. Out of love we should exercise the right principles of quarantine if they apply to us.

There are two main concerns with H1N1 at this time. The first is that this flu may become a far more serious problem in the northern hemisphere when the colder season begins to set in. The summer months have highly curtailed the potential for the spreading of this strain, prohibiting it from becoming far more widespread. However, this flu has been spreading more rapidly in the southern hemisphere where they are experiencing the colder seasons, and so the threat of it spreading rampantly in the winter months in the northern hemisphere is high.

The second and more serious concern is that this strain could mutate into an extremely deadly strain and do so very quickly. The potential for this is great, and with the time we live in it is likely. Even if this does not occur, a completely new strain will emerge that will prove to be much more fatal.

Although a person can apply all the principles of quarantine to the best of one’s physical ability, this does not guarantee that a person will be prevented from catching a communicable illness or from passing one along to others. We are to use wisdom (depending upon our own environment) and seek God’s help in all such matters. Following instruction that God gives should be first and foremost in our lives.

Compulsory vaccinations: Along with pandemics there is the likelihood of some governments enforcing compulsory vaccinations. Some will argue pros and cons to such vaccinations, but inevitably it is the responsibility of each individual to make his or her own personal decision in the matter. There can be great risk to receiving vaccinations and obviously there can be great risk in potentially catching a true pandemic illness when it strikes. In all decisions we make, we always place God first and look to Him as our provider and protector.

If a government enforces vaccinations in a time of pandemic, and you essentially no longer have free choice, then you do not change from your position of trusting in God for your protection. In such a case you will simply be trusting in God to protect you from any harm that could come from any potential risk of such a vaccination. Trusting in God for safety and protection from pandemic or from the risk of vaccination is still a matter of placing God first in your life.
